Links to things I found interesting, but didn't want to do a full blog post about.
- New Climate Warnings in Old Permafrost: 'It’s a Little Scary Because it’s Happening Under Our Feet.' "A new study shows a few degrees of warming can trigger abrupt thaws of vast frozen lands, releasing huge stores of greenhouse gases and collapsing landscapes."
- State of the climate: 2020 on course to be warmest year on record. "While this year will be memorable for many reasons, it is now more likely than not that 2020 will also be the warmest year for the Earth’s surface since reliable records began in the mid-1800s. This is all the more remarkable because it will lack any major El Niño event – a factor that has contributed to most prior record warm years."
- Interview with Elizabeth Bear (Ancestral Night). She is one of my favourite SFF authors. Her new book, Machine, is just out.
- Brexit and the Dismal Reality of 'Take Back Control'. Will Britain have to re-join the EU?
- Debunking the False Claim That COVID Death Counts Are Inflated. "President Trump, a congressman and conspiracy fantasists have repeated the myth. But three kinds of evidence point to more than 218,000 U.S. deaths."
- Is Venus a living hell? Conversation with astrobiologist David Grinspoon. Life on Venus might be more likely than life on Mars.
