Links to things I found interesting but didn't want to do a full blog post about.
- Face-Transforming LED Mask - App Controlled - Rechargeable. This is one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time. It renders face recognition software unusable, at least until its use gets banned (which will happen).
- A Woman's Intimate Record of Life in Wyoming in the Early Twentieth Century. "Lora Webb Nichols created and collected some twenty-four thousand negatives documenting life in her small town."
- Ed Yong: Building trust with people is slow - Delta is really fast. "As the Delta variant spreads amongst the unvaccinated, The Atlantic’s Ed Yong shares his reporting on how the variant – and skepticism – is spreading in Missouri."
- Hygiene theatre: how excessive cleaning gives us a false sense of security. 5"Covid-19 is a mainly airborne disease. So does our endless disinfecting and hand sanitising serve any purpose – or could it be worse than useless?"
- Tracking the rise of pixel detectors. "From their beginnings at CERN half a century ago, writes Chris Damerell, silicon pixel detectors for particle tracking have blossomed into a vast array of beautiful creations that have driven numerous discoveries, with no signs of the advances slowing down."
- Astronomers map a neutron star’s surface for the first time. "NASA’s NICER instrument reveals that neutron stars are not as simple as we thought."
